I’ve been a part of radio, music, and media for 30 years. That’s a long time to do something and still be passionate about it. I’m attracted to their main ingredient—the intimacy of the art form. Because in the right hands, hearts, and minds communication can transform one into a powerful tool for civic engagement.
In the beginning, my dream was just to be good enough on the radio to win the admiration of my friends and family. But radio got into my blood. I began as an on-air personality, then program director, and finally General Manager in major markets like New York, Miami, Houston, and San Francisco. I’m the author of the industry’s “how to book” No Static: A Guide to Creative Radio Programming. As Head of Promotion for Fantasy Records, I worked with some of the world’s leading musicians. I created promotional and marketing plans for artists ranging from jazz icon Sonny Rollins to Pleasure, The Blackbirds, and Bay Area legend Sylvester.
I have management experience in both corporate and non-profit sectors, with an emphasis on arts and culture. I’m a former co-chair of Youth Radio’s board of directors and a recipient of a Peabody Award for significant and meritorious achievement in broadcasting.
I was given the opportunity to work and grow in an industry that paid well and afforded me pathways to other creative outlets. I was the first African American to program a major market Top 40 radio station. As VP of Radio for MTV Networks over 100 Internet radio stations were created under my watch: years before Pandora and Spotify.
I needed something to hook my soul into and the community needs healing, so I became an agent for social change and joined three organizations—MOCHA (Oakland’s Children’s Museum, Bayview Opera House, and KPFA Radio all dedicated to making a difference in the lives of vulnerable communities.
I’m currently writing my memoir called “Tunes in my Head (A Radio and Records Memoir)” to be published in early 2024. Its focus will be on personal stories about breaking barriers and lasting creative relationships and the importance of mentorship that assisted me in my journey. I’m also working with new clients developing an online music platform, and a podcast network, and assisting clients in reaching strategic fundraising goals.
